Facilities
- Special requests - we have some special requests at campuses that I am writing up for this coming year's facilities requests. I am drafting dummy documents and will then pull specific information and then submit to ACC facilities. Projects include: construction at RVS for staff workspace and -if possible- space for a teaching area; NRG changes/moves for the front door area and possibly some RGC space changes. I will be meeting with managers in September to get more specific information for our ACC facilities groups.
- CYP furniture/final spreadsheet requests for all furniture, shelving, etc. were due to Bruce Davis, ACC project manager, on Friday. We went back and forth (thank you Rosemary and Linda!) with the vendor, rechecked for accuracy and turned the information in. Bruce wants to turn in the order after the start of the new fiscal year for installation/moving in November. We'll see if we can stick with that schedule. Although we have used Library Bureau as a sole source for several years, that will end with the CYP project. I will go out on bid after this project and Library Bureau may or may not get the bid..we've had more trouble this past year including a struggle to get vendor paperwork authorized for insurance. We got things cleared up Friday a week ago and then the order to our project manager this Friday.
- CYP staff and Rosemary and I toured CYP. It is very much in the hardhat construction stage so tours are not formally set up yet. I have requested a change in the carpet choices and Bruce is working with that request to see what we can do.
- SAC - as of this past Friday - has an occupancy certificate so that people may move in and then set up and work in time to serve students on August 28th. They are about ten days/two weeks behind, but I think things will be back on track. Rose and I went out last week and then I went out again on Friday with two new staff members and Patty to:
- .........note signage (we asked that the back hall signage for "library" be removed as it is not an entrance)
- .........check door locks...we have lockable doors on all IRT doors and we need to have the small group study door locks removed
- .........finalize which door will be the fire exit door in the back of the library...the correct door HAS been designated (thanks to Patty S. for calling this to our attention) and it should be installed soon
- .........so far all staff workstations have been set up and we will order privacy panels for in back of circ if they are needed (work spaces look very nice) Some staff computers have been delivered.
- .........shelving was delivered on Tuesday, the 8th, then furniture the next week during 8/14, 15 and 16
Technology
- .........The money for the replacement of all 99 LS laptops from the college's technology budget has been transferred to the IRT budget as of late last week. When hardware arrives it is locked into the cages at the Service Center for security. Margaret is working with Jen on rolling out replacement/imaging as they come in.
- .........The laptops for SAC have been ordered and when they arrive they will also be stored at the Service Center for security and again, Margaret will work with Jen on rolling out/imaging for these as well.
Staff
- SAC
The staff hired for South Austin include: - Other new positions:
CYP has three new employees slated to be hired this fall. We will be posting these positions mid September. They include:
.....CYP Head Librarian
.....CYP Reference Librarian
.....CYP/LA opening - Existing positions
By now of course everyone knows Leslie is leaving for greener pastures! Be sure to come to her going away party this Tuesday afternoon, August 8th, at PIN. Her HL position will be posted by this Friday, August 11th. Leigh Kilman will be chairing this committee and members include Nathan, Cesar and Judy Van Cleve.
- Internship
A library school student from North Texas, Molly Dahlstrom, will be working on her master's internship with added hourly hours this fall in LS. More later on Molly's project but I'm going to have her working on setting up a content "clearinghouse" and schedule for completing the major documents that we complete each year. Rosemary and I have been scheduling these in/gathering content this past year to attempt to standardize how we complete these management responsibilities. They include federal reports (IPEDs) state reports (data gathering, TexShare content, Closing the Gap reports for the college and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board) college (ULeads, Annual Reports, Fact Book work, accreditation documents, etc.)
Terese Morgan - Most recently Terese spent seven years as Associate Director of Victoria Public Library and before that was VPL's Head of Technical Services. Prior to that she was an academic librarian. She will be the Head Librarian at SAC. She starts on 8/14.
Saidah Ochoa - Saidah worked for many years at University of Texas/El Paso in a variety of positions including Reference Assistant. After completing her Master's degree, she was hired as a Reference Librarian and has held this position for this past year. She has extensive experience in information literacy. She will be a reference librarian at South Austin and starts on 8/7.
Theresa Foster - Theresa has over twenty years of experience as an Administrative Assistant. She will work as an LS AA at South Austin and - as the other AA's do - will also work at another campus, to be determined later. Theresa started work on August 1st.
Erin Cox - Erin has many years of experience in customer service and most recently at half-price books. She will be the SAC Library Assistant and started work on August 1st.
I am in the process of hiring part time/hourly employees and will put out additional emails when we complete this process. All of these new employees (except for Terese) will start out at RGC and will be working there until 8/11. We will send out email addresses and phone numbers when these are finalized.
Budget
I am trying to sort out variety of budget issues including:
--operating LS money for '07 (12 months)
--operating money for SAC (12 months)
--operating money for CYP (8-9 months)
--Weekend College money added back in to NRG (# of months?)
--Weekend College money added in to support the new Weekend college at RVS (# of months?)
--extension sites for LEA? PFL? (12 months? 8 months?)
Right now we're not sure what is where and what we got/given what we requested.
Services
- Richard and Bill and I are discussing guest/public access to public SAC workstations. We will be meeting together with Margaret, Jen, Marshall (new head of IRT computer centers) and Melanie to determine how we will handle access to information.
- After many years we have photo ID's back! The ID service purchase now offers us photo ID's and allows for future expanding into providing the storage of dollar amounts for printing from public service workstations. More later.
- Authentication - Although we had wanted to be able to put software in place to authenticate users at all campuses as they sat down to work at public service workstations, that will not take place until the spring of '07. More later.
IT IS MY PLAN TO HAVE AN LS-ALL MEETING AT SOUTH AUSTIN, IN THE LIBRARY ON THURSDAY AFTERNOON, AUGUST 24TH. WE WILL CLOSE THE LIBRARIES AS WE TYPICALLY DO. YOUR MANAGERS KNOW OF THIS TIME/DAY AND I WILL SEND OUT AN AGENDA/MORE INFORMATION LATER.
